According to The Athletic’s Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Charlie Eccleshare on the latest episode of The View From The Lane podcast (March 17), RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann would be a “really exciting appointment” for the club when Jose Mourinho leaves.
What did he say?
Eccleshare, Jack Pitt-Brooke and James Maw were talking about Spurs’ long-term future with things not going brilliantly at the moment, and decided to discuss the 32-year-old given The Times said he was a target around the time Mauricio Pochettino was sacked.
Of course, he has just knocked the north London outfit out of the Champions League over two legs, too.
Eccleshare said (19:20): “I think he’d be a really exciting appointment. He has a clear vision about how he likes to play. He’s young and exciting and expansive in his thinking, so I think he’d be a really exciting appointment somewhere down the line.
“He is someone who they’ve had an interest in before and I think had [Mauricio] Pochettino gone a year earlier then I think, Raphael Honigstein, our colleague reported that earlier this season.”
Money talks: How much did Levy pay for each of these Spurs stars?
Should Spurs target him when Mourinho goes?
They absolutely should.
Daniel Levy appears unlikely to pull the trigger on the Portuguese anytime soon having only placed his faith in him in December, but if things do turn completely pear-shaped then he may well have a decision to make.
Targeting Nagelsmann would seem like a sensible option for the Tottenham chairman.

The 32-year-old is one of the most highly-rated – The Daily Mail labelled him as “the world’s hottest young manager” this month – coaches in Europe and given his age, it is impressive what he has achieved with Hoffenheim previously and now RB Leipzig – competing with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and being the quarter-finals of the Champions League this term is no mean feat.
In addition, he likes his team to play the pressing football that became so synonymous in the early stages of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign at Tottenham especially – I’m sure lots of fans would prefer to see a return to that style compared to what has generally been on offer this term.
In other Spurs news, if Tottenham do lose Harry Kane it has been suggested that one 22-goal striker would be an “incredible” replacement…
