According to The Star, Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay believes captain Tom Lees is getting back to his best.
This comes after The Owls managed to keep their first clean sheet in the Championship this season, against bitter rivals Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
However, it was only a few weeks ago that the centre-back was dropped against QPR. The Owls slumped to a 3-0 loss that day, which was during a terrible spell of four consecutive losses.
Lees immediately bounced back into the team, and there has been a marked improvement in his performances since then. He looked very solid against The Blades, in a game where they were under a huge amount of pressure defensively. It was another case of the manager chopping and changing his team and formation, but the system with three centre-backs looks the best. Not only did it bring the landmark clean sheet the club have so desperately been craving, but it brought the best out of Lees.
The fact that Luhukay thinks the captain is reaching his best again should be a clear fork in the road for Wednesday. Often, a captain’s performances embody the team’s performances, and that is certainly applicable to The Owls; whilst Leeds struggled, so did the entire team.
So Lees’ perceived turnaround can rally his entire team and force and change in their fortunes. If they show the spirit they showed against their rivals in their upcoming matches, then they will surely be back to winning ways. Derby at home is a tough fixture after the international break, but Wednesday seem to have a new confidence instilled in them borne from their captain Lees.
