Most football fans expect every season that Manchester United will be in the title race come May, Newcastle United are to have a boardroom scuffle for the umpteenth time and Wigan will again be scrapping for their Premier League lives. These are some of the truths we have grown ever so used to in modern times, but what about some of the less straightforward issues, and indeed some of the more odd decisions that have shaped the football calendar this term?
Football is unpredictable and erratic. Whether you are an advocate of goal-line technology or not, the uncertainty of outcome is most definitely the key principle underpinning the fabric of the game we cherish so much. Take away the debate of shock managerial departures, ‘was it-wasn’t it’ over the line controversies and wrongful player dismissals and all us fans and punditry panels alike would be groaning in a boring and lonely existence. I mean, just what would messrs Hansen and Lawrenson do?
So we thought we would take a reflective standpoint on the season thus far and select some of the strange decisions witnessed this campaign. Whether they baffled, enraged or simply left you open mouthed with shock, PART ONE highlights ten decisions that certainly created waves and divided opinion amongst the football public.
